Since the inception of Kanata Periodontics we have made a commitment to the environment. In our operatories, we use digital radiography that reduces the chemicals in the office as well as impact on our environment. Digital radiography also requires a lower radiation dose for our patients and allows us to digitally transmit the information in the highest quality. We choose to use cloth bibs and towels; we wash them in-house with energy efficient appliances. All our cleaning products are the greenest available that surpasses all infection control requirements. Further to that we have chosen to be a digital office using iPads and electronic transmissions whenever possible. This helps to minimise the amount of paper generated and wasted. Our equipment is energy efficient and we recycle as much as possible. Our warm and inviting office has been designed to provide you with optimal care with the least impact on our environment.
In 2009, Dr. Chong introduced laser assisted periodontal care at Kanata Periodontics. Despite the slow interest from the periodontal community, Dr. Chong quickly realized its potential and the positive impact for patient care. Dr. Chong was the first periodontist in North America to utilise the Kavo KEY 3+ LASER for periodontal therapy and was one of a handful to use laser therapy on a regular basis. Since that time, Dr. Chong has updated her laser treatment with the latest technology from BioLase - the Waterlase iPlus. She has spent a wealth of time on advanced training for laser therapy and has achieved her certification at the Academy of Laser Dentistry. Along with laser therapy, Dr. Chong and Kanata Periodontics is up to date in a wide variety of periodontal therapy. For all aspects of care that pertains to your gingival health, you can be assured that Kanata Periodontics will able to provide you with the best possible options. Kanata Periodontics also provides implant therapy with the latest technology.
Dr. Chong has completed an advanced implant treatment program with the gIDE Institute along with countless hours of education in all aspects of implant care. We provide solutions to replace a single tooth, several teeth or even complete loss of teeth with implant therapy.

Our practice provides complete care in periodontal therapy and surgical implant dentistry. A wide variety of treatment is available in our clinic. All treatment is available with conscious and inhalational sedation.
In our clinic, we prefer to regenerate the lost tissue due to periodontal disease. Several techniques and materials are used in our practise to maximize the regenerative potential of each situation. Careful case selection and applied technique are utilized whenever possible.
Crown lengthening is required when the edge of decay or a restoration is too deep below the gum tissue and not accessible. The procedure involves adjusting the level of the gum tissue and bone around the tooth to create access for the restorative material and allow longterm access for hygiene in this area.
Dental implants are designed to provide a foundation for replacement teeth that look, feel, and function like natural teeth. In our clinic, we provide the services required to prepare the area for an implant which may involve gingival grafting or bone augmentation as well as the placement and longterm follow up of the implant.
When gingival recession occurs, grafting or reconstruction may be offered to create tissue strength to protect the area from bacteria and trauma. Gingival recession may result in root sensitivity, increase risk to decay as well as an altered aesthetic appearance. A gingival graft is designed to solve these problems and is a predictable procedure that can result in longterm strengthening and stability.
The following are some common procedures prescribed for patients:
When periodontal disease is extensive and destruction of the underlying bone and supporting tissues is involved, it is may be necessary to treat the disease through surgical access. The goals of this procedure are:
- to gain access below the gingiva for a thorough cleaning
- to reposition the gingiva to allow for longterm maintenance and health
- to correct the anatomy and promote periodontal health
- to stop the progression of destructive periodontal disease
Kanata Periodontics are leaders in the use of laser therapy in periodontal care. Dr. Chong has integrated laser therapy since 2009 and she has earned her Advanced Proficiency certification with the Academy of Laser Dentistry. The use of lasers in dentistry is a progressive and innovative option. As seen in the medical field, such as dermatology and opthamology, lasers offer a variety of treatment options with rapid healing and less side effects. Each type of laser has a different wavelength and is used for different purposes. Some dental lasers are used for hard tissue, some soft tissue and some both. A dental laser can help a dentist provide optimal treatment often with minimal discomfort, bleeding and anaesthetic. Procedures involving soft tissues can cause bleeding with traditional cutting methods. Lasers can cut into soft tissue, but the blood vessels are sealed while the laser cuts eliminating the blood loss that is typical during these procedures. At Kanata Periodontics we utilise the most advanced laser on the market for treating periodontal disease. The Waterlase iPlus by Biolase has many benefits as a all-tissue laser and has resulted in fantastic, non-invasive methods to treat periodontal disease. Because they are precision instruments, lasers are extremely useful in cosmetic procedures, such as gum line reshaping. Procedures that would normally require anesthetic, scalpels and sutures can be performed bloodlessly and with less trauma, resulting in reduced post-operative swelling and scarring. The potential for infections can also be reduced significantly when a laser is used compared to traditional instruments.
During IV (conscious) sedation, however, you are not “asleep” but rather in a much safer and more comfortable “semi-awake” state of reduced anxiety. You will most likely have little or no memory of the dental procedures that were performed because of the amnesic affect of the medications used to provide the sedation. During IV sedation, you are able to respond to verbal commands, or to a light physical touch. You need no medical assistance to maintain adequate breathing and heart function.
